TOAST POST joins the NoViPro project
29.10.2026 20:41
Toast Post Production is developing an AI-assisted production workflow as part of the NoViPro project. The workflow brings together the design and use of virtual locations, visual continuity management and high-end post-production. The aim is to turn it into a service model that helps film, television and advertising producers select and combine the right production methods for their projects.
The work starts with the client’s story or idea, visual goals, budget and schedule. From the planning stage, the team considers what should be filmed, where virtual environments or AI could add value, and how material created using different methods can work together. The implications for post-production and final delivery are considered at the same time.
AI, virtual locations and continuity at the heart of the research
Toast is investigating how AI can be used to design and modify virtual locations and combine them with filmed footage. A key question is how to maintain a consistent visual look and continuity when a production combines filmed footage, digitally built environments and AI-generated or AI-processed material.
The research also examines how information about locations, assets and creative choices moves from pre-production through filming to post-production. The aim is for each stage to draw on the same source information and earlier decisions, while keeping the material editable through to final finishing. Creative professionals direct the use of AI, approve decisions and evaluate the results.
Post-production expertise from the planning stage
Toast brings expertise in editing, colour grading, visual effects, sound and finishing to the service model. The aim is to consider from the outset how material can be edited, combined and finished when selecting production methods. The development work draws on Toast’s own expertise, its network of collaborators and existing tools.
Versioning and localisation needs are also included: how content can be adapted for different languages and distribution channels while preserving the work’s creative intent and technical quality. This allows the intended uses of the finished content to inform workflow planning as well.
From client needs to testing and a service model
In the early stages of NoViPro, Toast is mapping client needs and comparing AI-assisted production methods and workflows. This work will inform the selection of workflows for more detailed study and the design of focused tests. Later, pilot productions will assess how well the methods work in practical production settings.
The assessment will examine final quality, visual continuity, working time, the need for corrections, the editability of material and compatibility between production stages. The aim is to build a repeatable service model around workflows that prove effective in the research, helping clients make informed production choices and anticipate their impact on the project as a whole.
Toast’s NoViPro project runs from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2028. It forms part of a joint project programme co-funded by Business Finland, involving Oulu University of Applied Sciences, Mediatrade Oy, Toast Post Production Oy and Whatevergroup Oy. DIMECC Oy supports project coordination.
